Non-matriculating courses

Take classes
as non-matriculating student
at a nearby university
offers course credit. (Go to
the best university possible.) You will not receive financial aid for these courses,
so plan wisely.
My recommendations on how to proceed are as follows:
If possible, speak to the Chair of Graduate Admissions
at the universities you’re interested in
attending. Typically
, this is
a faculty member in charge of graduate admissions for that
particular department). Ask what classes you might take as a non-matriculating student
through concurrent enrollment that would increase your potential for graduate admission.
Concurrent enrollment is the ideal way to take these courses, as you will be in the same
with matriculating students.
Plan to take
courses over the next year
or two.
may need to take only one or two classes, or it could be as many as
three to five
The courses
that may be suggested
be graduate level courses.
Try to obtain “A”
the class if you’re getting a B.
Most graduate programs require students to obtain
3.5 GPA’s, so
your graduate school potential if you obtain B grades.
Stay in contact with the department (per
iodically contact the
faculty member you spoke to
inform them of your progress
If you can’t speak to
the Chair of Graduate Admissions prior to signing up for classes as a
non-matriculating student, take
classes (upper division or graduate), in
you’re interested in studying

Volunteer July 2014

Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation

Protects and preserves the Neuse River basin through education, advocacy and enforcement to provide clean water for drinking, recreation and enjoyment to the communities it serves.
Volunteer Positions:
Annual Neuse River Spring Clean-up
The Neuse River Spring Clean-up occurs on the first Saturday in April.  This is a one-day event from 8 A.M. to 2 P.M. where volunteers help remove trash and debris form the Neuse and some of it's tributaries.  Our volunteers include youth groups, church and civic organizations, business associates, paddle clubs and river enthusiasts.
Muddy Water Watch (MWW)
The Muddy Water Watch project is a community-based, citizen training project designed to reduce sediment pollution--the number one pollutant in NC streams and rivers. The project was created in direct response to citizen complaints about sediment related impacts they could see in their own neighborhoods.  The program provides education, training workshops and support that will give citizens the necessary tools to actively engage with local governing bodies, policymakers and developers on issues concerning clean water in their communitites.

RiverWatch is a "neighborhood watch" program for the Lower Neuse River Basin. After a training session to learn about the river, pollution threats, and how to recognize them, volunteers will spend 8 hours per month on their assigned river or creek looking for potential pollution problems.
Neuse River Day
Neuse River Day is an annual community festival at Union Point Park in New Bern, NC.  The festival includes environmental exhibitors, live music, entertainers, arts and crafts vendors and lots of good food; but the main entertainment is on the water.  Paddling enthusiasts, participate in canoe and raft races, some are serious and some are just for fun. There are a variety of volunteer positions from the planning committee to selling tickets.

Riverkeeper Film Festival
If you enjoy Independent and Documentary films, the Riverkeepr Film Festival just might be the perfect volunteer position for you.  Our festival opens in Raleigh and travels to several theaters in the Neuse Basin.  We need volunteers to help in all locations.
Administrative Assistance
Occasionally we need office help with a mass mailing or assembling workbooks.

If you would like to volunteer to help in the office please call or email the Riverkeeper Office in your area.
